Christmas Foods to Avoid with Braces

We’re counting down the days until Christmas here at Arlington Pediatric Dentistry, and we’re sure many of our patients are as well! As your Arlington, VA affordable dentist and pediatric orthodontist, we understand that some of our patients are wearing braces during this time, which can put a bit of a damper on the best part of the holiday. No, we’re not talking about the presents – we mean the sweet, holiday treats! Unfortunately, for a person who’s wearing braces, there are quite a few foods that need to be avoided for fear of them damaging a patient’s braces. Not to worry! It’s our goal to provide the most hassle-free and enjoyable experience possible for patients who are undergoing orthodontic treatment, so Arlington, VA pediatric orthodontist and team have come up with a list of foods to avoid for the holiday…and also a few that can be absolutely enjoyed!

Avoid Any Hard Foods

The first type of food we want to mention is hard food. Hard foods can potentially break the brackets or wires of the braces when they’re consumed, which is why any food that falls into this category needs to be avoided. Some of the most common Christmas treats that come in the hard variety are:

  • Gingerbread Cookies
  • Candy Canes
  • Peanut Brittle
  • Pecan Pie
  • Hard Biscuits
  • Anything with Nuts

Avoid Any Sticky Foods

The other big category of foods that need to be avoided is sticky food. The problem with sticky food is that it can get stuck in the braces and tug on them, sometimes loosening them or even pulling them off completely. Some examples of these sticky foods include the following:

  • Caramel Apples
  • Toffee
  • Sticky Puddings
  • Anything with Caramel

Christmas Food You Can Eat

Thankfully, there are still plenty of different delicious foods that you can eat during Christmas…and we’ll be glad to help you find some! Here are just a handful of our favorite braces-friendly foods during the Christmas season.

  • Turkey and Ham (Cut into Small or Thin Pieces)
  • Mashed Potatoes
  • Soft Dinner Rolls
  • Sliced Fruit
  • Custard
  • Pumpkin Pie
  • Ice Cream
