Hygiene Tips for Braces

At Arlington Pediatric Dentistry, we want to help all of our patients in and around Arlington, VA achieve a healthier smile. The foundation of a healthy smile lies in a great oral hygiene routine, although if you’re wearing braces, it may be a bit more difficult to maintain it. As your trusted affordable pediatric dentist in Arlington, VA, we’d like to give you a few tips on how to optimize your level of oral hygiene.

Brush Four Times a Day

While you may be used to brushing twice a day, when you’re wearing braces, it’s important to brush four times a day instead. Braces have many small crevices in them that can trap food particles. When these particles linger inside your mouth for too long, they can cause oral and dental problems, such as tooth decay and gum disease. The extra brushing will help keep your mouth free of bacteria. We recommend brushing after each of your three meals and then once again before bedtime.

Remember to Floss, Too

It’s just as important to floss daily when you have braces, though it’s not quite the same task when you have a metal wire running across your teeth. Thankfully, there are other devices available that can help make the job easier. There are floss threaders to help get the floss into the difficult space near the gums. Also, you can use an interdental toothbrush, a simple tool that will slide in between your teeth and remove any food particles or bacteria.

Utilize a Dental Travel Kit

With school and other activities going on, you may not always be at your home to brush and floss your teeth. Not to worry though! If you have a travel kit with all of your needed dental supplies, you’ll be able to brush and floss your teeth on the go. Make sure to bring a toothbrush, some toothpaste, and some floss in your dental kit so that you can clean your teeth after you eat no matter where you are.
