Trick or Teeth: Halloween in Braces

Trick or Teeth: Halloween in Braces
Posted on 10/19/2015

Happy Halloween from our family at Arlington Pediatric Dentistry to yours! Halloween is a fun and festive holiday, but it can be super spooky for parents of braces-wearers. With treats and sweets around every corner, it can be difficult to keep your child from munching on Halloween goodies. Fortunately, just because you have braces, doesn’t mean all Halloween goodies are off limits. Our team at Arlington has put together a list of treats you can continue to enjoy this season.

Halloween Treats You Can Enjoy With Braces

Feel free to nibble on these soft and easy-to-chew treats, and remember to brush and floss after.

Gelatin candy
Powdered candy
Soft chocolate and soft cookies (not nuts)
Nougat-filled candy bars
Peanut butter cups
Ice cream
Thinly sliced apples

Foods to Avoid

The rule of thumb with braces is to avoid foods that are sticky, crunchy and high in sugar content. Here are some Halloween staples you’ll want to steer clear of.

Caramel
Jelly Beans
Hard pretzels
Gum
Nuts
Licorice
Taffy
Popcorn
Chips

We also recommend you avoid apple bobbing. Biting into a whole apple can cause damage to braces.

Braces-Friendly Halloween Popsicles

You will need popsicle molds (or small disposable cups), popsicle sticks, Greek yogurt, orange juice and pineapple juice.

1. Fill a third of each popsicle mold or small cups with sweetened Greek Yogurt. Allow these to freeze for at least 30 minutes.
2. Add a layer of orange juice to the molds, filling the second third of each mold or cup. Add popsicle sticks with this layer, and allow this new layer to freeze.
3. Finally, add in the last layer of pineapple juice, and freeze.
4. You will end up with braces-friendly popsicle resembling the appearance of candy corn. Enjoy!
