Nitrous Oxide for Children

Child in dental chair. At Arlington Pediatric Dentistry, our talented dentists and amazing staff have created a fun, safe and friendly environment designed to put our young patients at ease. While most children are not afraid to receive dental care, some of our patients are simply too fearful to receive the dental care they need wherein we may recommend sedation dentistry using nitrous oxide to ease their fears for stress-free treatment.

Nitrous oxide is a gas used to safely and effectively administer conscious sedation in which the patient is awake for the duration of the dental procedure while feeling completely relaxed and even happy. During the administration of nitrous oxide, none of the body's functions are affected and the patient remains in a relaxed and comfortable state, allowing the dentist to easily carry out the procedure or treatment.

How We Administer Nitrous Oxide

When we administer nitrous oxide, a small fitted mask is placed over your child's nose. Your child will be told to just breathe normally. As the gas starts taking effect, your child will relax and experience a sense of well-being. The gas may produce feelings of giddiness or very mild euphoria. This is why nitrous oxide is often referred to as “laughing gas.”

Once the procedure is over, the flow of nitrous oxide is turned off and the oxygen level is  increased. After a few minutes of relaxing in the chair, your child will feel completely normal. Nitrous oxide is completely safe to use and it is eliminated very rapidly from the body once the flow of gas is turned off. During the entire procedure, your child will be awake and able to interact & communicate with the dentist.

Nitrous oxide can prove very beneficial for children who have a great deal of fear and/or anxiety about receiving the dental care they need. We will take a complete medical history which includes asking you about any medication your child is taking before administering nitrous oxide. We will be sure that your child is safe, comfortable and relaxed. To help children relax, sometimes we create a fantasy wherein the child is an airplane pilot wearing a flight mask. This helps spark children's imagination while allowing them to have a bit of fun while undergoing the dental treatment or procedure they need.
