Sedation Dentistry

At Arlington Pediatric Dentistry, our exceptional dentists and friendly staff want all our patients to have comfortable and pain-free dental experiences. Our Arlington VA pediatric dentistry practice offers sedation dentistry which is a term used to describe the use of sedation during dental treatment.

Types of Sedation We Use

We use several different types of sedation, including:

  • Nitrous Oxide
  • General Anesthetic

When Sedation is Used

The most common uses for sedation includes:

  • For patients needing extensive procedures or major dental treatment
  • For patients who cannot sit still in a dentist chair
  • For patients who have dental phobia
  • For patients with a low tolerance for pain
  • For patients with physical handicaps
  • For patients with strong gag reflexes

The American Dental Association or ADA endorses sedation as an effective way to make many patients comfortable during dental visits. We always take the time to speak with parents before we administer any sedative or anesthetic which includes talking about how sedation works and pre- and post-sedation instructions. Before we use sedation on your child, be sure to tell us about any medical treatments or medication your child is receiving.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide or “laughing gas” is a type of conscious sedation that can help children relax while getting the dental treatment they need. This gas, which is administered with a mixture of oxygen, allows us to provide dental treatment to anxious, frightened and phobic patients while they're receiving the dental care they need. When a child is given nitrous oxide, he or she is fully awake and able to talk with the dentist. Then once the treatment is done, the gas is turned off and oxygen is breathed in for a few minutes to flush away all the remaining gas.
